Multi-Touch Sensing through Frustrated Total Internal Reflection
-
Sparsh UI gesture server project
Jefferson Han. "Low cost multi-touch sensing through frustrated total image refraction" Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology: Proceedings of the 18th Annual ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology.
Apparently this type of screen need not be flat and we could in theory make a cylindrical one. The system works with a piece of acryllic, lit from the edges by strong IR LEDs. Magic (physics) prevents the light from leaving the acrylic unless you touch the plastic. Your finger will scatter the light backwards thanks to a phenomenon known as frustrated total internal reflection. A video camera mounted at the back then records where on the screen the touch occurred and software interprets the part of the image that light emits from into coordinates. The computer then knows where your finger is touching.
